Petit Soupe à l'Oignon
Petit Soupe à l'Oignon

Each year, my brother and I take a trip together, just the two of us. This year for our third annual trip we hiked around Mont Blanc for a week. Mont Blanc is the highest peak in Western Europe and is nestled between the borders of France, Italy, and Switzerland.
When we weren't hiking, we were eating. This petite série of blind contour drawings highlights some of our favorite dishes and drinks from the trip.
Soupe à l'Oignon is a serving of the French classic, French Onion Soup. If you look closely, you can imagine the floral design around the edge of the plate, the napkin under the pedestal soup bowl, and even the herb garnish on top.

What is a blind contour sketch?
Blind contour sketching is a technique where the artist does not look at the paper or surface they are drawing on throughout the entire process of creating the drawing, oftentimes never lifting their pencil. The artist has their gaze focused solely on their subject from start to finish. As you can see, the end result is often abstract, imperfect, and unique.
For me, this drawing technique became an active practice in releasing expectations and refocusing attention on the subject and not the outcome of the drawing.
